    Abstract:

To investigate the characteristics of standing balance control in young adults under different support surfaces and time scales using Sample Entropy (SEn) analysis. Twenty-two young adults (11 males, 11 females) participated in three standing tasks (bilateral stance, left leg stance, right leg stance) on both hard and soft support surfaces, each lasting 30 seconds. Center of Pressure (COP) data in the anterior-posterior (AP) and medial-lateral (ML) directions were recorded and analyzed for Sample Entropy, Entropic half-life (EnHL), and entropy change rate. Results show that significant differences in EnHL were observed in both AP and ML directions for males standing on the left leg on a soft support surface (P < 0.05). Significant differences in EnHL were found in the AP direction for males and females standing on the right leg on a soft support surface (P < 0.05). The entropy half-life exceeded 100 ms for males and females across all standing conditions. During single-leg stance on a soft support surface, males exhibited significantly higher SEn values in both AP and ML directions compared to females (P < 0.05). During bilateral stance on a hard support surface, males showed a entropy change rate of -0.005, indicating a tendency towards backward movement and fewer postural adjustments. Conclusion: Diminished proprioception may lead to varying balance control strategies between genders, with males tending towards forward adjustments and females towards backward adjustments. Gender did not significantly affect the stability of standing on both legs; however, males may require more interventions and adjustments to maintain balance under specific conditions of disturbance.
